Create a Family Group 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

The Create a Family Group feature lets you build a private space just for your family. It’s designed to help you stay connected, share memories, and celebrate your family’s unique story across generations.

When you create a family group, you can:

  • Name your group to reflect your family’s identity

  • Add a description to share your family’s history or purpose

  • Upload a cover photo to personalize your space

  • Invite family members to join—either from existing groups or by email or mobile

  • Choose who can send invitations to keep your group private and secure

And here’s something great: family members can be part of more than one family group! This means they can stay connected to different branches of the family, join reunion planning groups, or participate in groups focused on specific ancestors or family lines.

Whether you're organizing a reunion, preserving family history, or simply staying in touch, your family group is a place to bring everyone together.

Create a New Family Group

1. Click "Family Groups."

2. Click in the "Group Name" field.

3. Create a Name for Your Family Group 🏷️
Give your family group a name that reflects your family's story, personality, or shared history. A thoughtful name helps make your group feel more personal and welcoming to everyone who joins.

Here are some ideas to inspire you:

· The Smith Family Circle

· Descendants of Jim & Tina Smith

· Charlotte Roots – The Smith Legacy

· Grandma Jane’s Crew

· The Johnson Family Reunion Group

· Cousins & Kin – The Taylor Lineage

You can keep it traditional, fun, or meaningful—whatever feels right for your family. Don’t worry, you can always update the name later if you change your mind.

4. Click the "Description" field.

5. Add a Description to Tell Your Family Group’s Story 📝
Make your family group feel more personal by adding a description that shares a bit about your family’s history and connections. This is a great way to help members feel welcome and understand the heart of your group.

Here are some ideas to include in your description:

· A brief history of your family or ancestors

· Where your family is originally from or where they’ve lived

· Names of key family members or generations

· Fun facts, traditions, or shared memories

· The purpose of your group (e.g., staying connected, planning reunions, sharing photos)

You can add your description now or come back and update it anytime. It’s your story—make it yours!

6. Add a Cover Photo to Personalize Your Family Group 🖼️
Make your family group feel even more special by adding a cover photo that reflects your family's story and connections. A great photo can bring warmth and personality to your group space.
Here are a few ideas to inspire you:

· A cherished photo of your ancestors

· A fun snapshot from a recent family reunion

· A vintage family portrait

· A candid moment that captures your family's spirit

You can do this now or come back and update it anytime.

7. Click "Next."

8. If you are already a member of a family group, you have the option to invite members from your current family group to join your new family group. You can do this now or come back to it later when you're ready.

9. Want to bring more loved ones into your family group? You can easily invite family members who aren’t yet on FamConnections!

Just click the “Invite from Outside FamConnections” button. You’ll need their email address to send the invitation. It’s a simple way to help them join the fun and stay connected.

Not ready to invite everyone just yet? No worries—you can always come back and do it later when the time is right.

10. As the family group owner, you have the option to decide who can invite others to join. If you’d like to keep things simple and maintain control over group membership, you can choose to allow only yourself to send invitations. This helps ensure your group stays private and just the way you want it. You can update this setting anytime.

11. To make it easy for your family members to join your group, select the “Notify via email & mobile number if available” option when inviting them. This will send a friendly invitation directly to their inbox or phone as a text message—whichever contact info is available.

Don’t worry if you’re not ready to send invites just yet. You can always come back and send them later when the time feels right.

12. Click "Create Group."

You’ve successfully created a new family group—great job! Your family group is now ready to bring loved ones together, share memories, and celebrate your unique family story.
