Collaboration on Family Trees - Permissions

This article describes how to work with others on the family tree and the permissions that each person has

Updated over a week ago

The FamConnections family tree is different from most family tree platforms in that it was made to be collaborative. Once a user has joined and their email is connected to the node, each person has control over their node.

Adding Someone To Your Family Tree

  • You can connect someone to a node in a number of ways.

    • You can add the person's email to the node that you want to connect them to. They will receive and invitation and be able to accept or reject the connection to your family tree. Once they connect, they own that node and only they can edit the contents of their profile.

    • You can add someone who is in a mutual family group by using the drop-down when you create the node.

Family Tree Invitations

  • When you receive a tree invitation, you will see it the tree section on the left panel. When you select it, you will see the node that you have been connected to and how it relates to the tree that you have been invited to connect with.

  • If you accept the invitation, your "My Tree" and the person who invited you's tree will be connected into one collaborative tree.

    • Only you have editing capability over the nodes that you created unless you invite someone to edit that node.

Adding Nodes To The Tree - Permissions

  • You are allowed to add new nodes to any node in your immediate family

  • You are allowed to add nodes to any node that you created

  • You can add nodes to other people's nodes if they have "Allow family members to help you build your tree" selected. The default is checked for all new users.
